Chapter 11

It’d been a long, emotional day, and my whole body felt heavy as I climbed the stairs to the guest room. I fell across the bed. The weight of my body made a thumping noise. And now, I had the added burden of making a good impression on Paolo in the morning.

I plugged in my phone and checked my messages. My cell chimed with a series of incoming photos. Ivayla sending pictures she’d taken throughout the day, of me on the chairlift, gazing over a stone wall, stopping to try on a hat at a store, and a few of her and I together. Tourist shots—the kind that a foreigner in a foreign land would show his family when he got home from his trip.

I forwarded a few to Claudia, one of them, a shot of Ivayla and me in Sorrento. A moment later, my cell pinged with her response.

Claudia: Capri looks amazing. Best of all, you look HAPPY! This trip is good for you. Any news on Giovanni?

Me: Mostly dead ends. Losing faith that we will find him. On the plus side, got invited to paint with the Duke.

Claudia: Awesome!

Me: Nervous he’ll find out I’m a fraud.

Claudia: You are NO SUCH THING. You’ll rock it.

Me: Thanks. You always believe in me.

Claudia: Because I’m a fan. <3. Your doctor friend is vry beautiful! Nothing there?

Me: Niente — not for the lack of wishing.

Claudia: Maybe it’s those shoes.

I laughed out loud.

Me: I’ll wear my sneakers tmw and report back. You still pregnant?

Claudia: Expansively so. Having our girls talk to the little booger, and tell him he needs to come out. Could be any time now. BTW, Toby says to check your email. He found a house in Davis Park he’s excited about. He wants to set up an appointment with the realtor to see it as soon as you get home.

Sure enough, when I opened my email, I found one from Toby. He’d sent information with photos of a two-floor bungalow on Fire Island—the rental house he wanted us to buy. It needed fixing up: a bathroom and kitchen, reno and landscaping. All stuff Toby, Ray, and I were capable of. It would feel good to work on something I owned. I replied with my permission to set up the appointment, that I was ready to provide my autograph wherever needed. I sent another email to Grams’ lawyer, making sure Mr. Morris would release my inheritance to my bank account as soon as I returned to the states to pay for my share of the property.

I also emailed Luigi Delatorre, passing on what we’d learned from the old woman in Anacapri. The woman’s information from both capped and broadened the search for Lo Duca. I hoped Luigi could use it to figure out the next step.

The date on the email was a rude reminder that I had one week left in Italy. As it stood, looking for Giovanni Lo Duca could easily push past my allotted two weeks. Sticking around longer would put Toby and Ray in a tight situation, winterizing the rental properties.
